Graston Technique & IASTM in Los Angeles
Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization for stubborn, chronic-feeling areas, followed by training that helps you use your new mobility.
The Graston Technique® is a branded form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), in which a clinician uses specially designed stainless-steel tools to detect and treat areas of soft-tissue restriction. At StretchFormation, IASTM is a supporting therapy for stubborn, chronic-type problem areas, used together with our alignment and strength training.
What is IASTM?
Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization uses rigid tools with beveled edges that are stroked across the skin over muscles and connective tissue. The tools can help the practitioner feel areas of restriction and apply targeted pressure. Graston Technique® is one well-known, trademarked IASTM system with its own instruments and training program.
Therapeutic scraping (IASTM)
Therapeutic scraping, or instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), uses therapy tools to help with more chronic-type problem areas by restarting the healing process and breaking up scar tissue in stagnant, problematic areas.
When we use it
We reach for IASTM for more chronic-type issues: “stagnant,” problematic areas where tissue feels stuck and other approaches haven’t made much difference. The goal is to improve the mobility of the soft tissue so you can move into better positions.
Why it’s paired with movement
Instrument work is typically followed by stretching, strengthening or movement so improved mobility is put to use. That is exactly how we use it: as preparation for alignment, stability and strength training. Learn more in What is the Graston Technique?
What it feels like
You may feel pressure and a scraping sensation; some tenderness or temporary redness afterward is common. It should never be sharply painful. Let your practitioner know if you bruise easily or take blood-thinning medication.
Built to support your training
Supporting therapies help you get into better positions. Our posture, alignment & strength training is what helps you keep them, building the stability, dynamic posture and movement that support long-term physical health.
This service is offered for wellness and mobility purposes and is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. Individual results vary.
Graston Technique FAQs
Is Graston the same as gua sha?
Both use tools on the skin, but they come from different traditions. Gua sha is a traditional East Asian practice; Graston Technique® is a modern, trademarked IASTM system with stainless-steel instruments and a structured clinical protocol.
Is it painful?
It can feel intense over restricted areas, and mild soreness or redness afterward is common. It should not be sharply painful, and pressure is adjustable.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed to book a session at StretchFormation. If you have an injury or medical condition, consult a licensed healthcare provider first.
